Chapter 14 Using the Systems Management Web Console
Monitoring and managing remote systems
To monitor or manage components, log in to the Systems Management
tree view as described in "Connecting to the Web
console". Expand the Systems Management
tree view to see the following folders:
- Components by Type - displays
all the components by type. For example, if you have three EAServer
installations, all three servers, regardless of where they are installed,
appear in a folder called EAServer Service.
- Components by Host - displays all the components
according to where they are installed. For example, if you have
the machines, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, you see a folder for each
of the machines. Inside each folder is a representation of all the
components installed on that host.
- All Components - displays all the components
that are registered in the CIM Repository.
From each of these folders you can start or stop managed services,
and retrieve error logs and other statistical information for each
service.
Next to each managed service is an icon that represents the
state of the service. A green icon with a check mark indicates that
the service is up and running. The red icon with the "X" indicates
that the service is stopped, and the blue question mark indicates
that the console cannot detect the state of the service.
There are two ways to start, stop, or retrieve logs for any
of the listed components:
- Select the component
in the object tree. The property sheet of the selected component
displays in the details view. Click the icon in the details view to
start, stop, or retrieve the error log.
If you select the option to retrieve the error log in
the details view, the utility returns only 10 lines of the log.
If you want to retrieve more lines, print the error log, or copy
and paste any portion of the error log to another utility, you must
access the error log through the Methods folder located directly
beneath the services folder.
- Click the plus-sign icon next to the service to
expand the folder view. This displays two folders, also in the object
view:
- Methods - this folder contains
methods (actions and functions) that can be performed on the selected
service, such as get error log, start service, or stop service.
Access the error log through this folder if you want to print
it, or copy and paste it into another application.
- Settings - this folder displays a list,
in the details view, of the available component settings that an
administrator can modify, such as the component's installation
path.
Methods
The methods that you can execute against an installed service
are Java methods. Some methods, such as starting or stopping a service,
are executed against the component when you click on the diamond-shaped
icon.
Other methods that require parameters display an input screen
in the details view. Methods that require one or more parameters
have a square-shaped icon.
The details view displays an input field for each required
parameter.
When retrieving error logs, the console displays an
input field for the number of lines that you want to retrieve from
the error log. Enter a numeric value, and click Execute Method to
complete the action.
Settings
When you select the Setting icon in the object tree, the object
tree expands to show the types of settings that are associated with
the selected component, typically:
- Installation information - the
path to the installation directory.
- Configuration information - the configuration
properties that display depend on the selected component, and contain
parameters such as user name and password used to log in to the
selected service, environment variables, paths to the location of
error logs, and the URL for TDS connections, and so on.
Changing the settings
of a component
- Select the setting in the object tree.
- In the details view, any settings that are associated
with the component display in the column labeled Property. In the
corresponding Value column (immediately to the right of the Property
column), change the value of the property to the new value.
- Click Apply to save the new settings, or click Reset
to return the property values to their original state.
